So I started doing a half-assed comic as of late, and it's been pretty fun. Drawing comics is a whole different way of thinking than storyboarding. I really had a hard time before, with panel layout and page composition, but recently I think I've gotten a better grip on it. So, at CalArts there is a tradition during first semester to get everybody together and make a film in 48 hours. Random words are submitted, and drawn out of a hat at midnight on friday. The film must fit the theme in some small way, but other than that there is free reign to do whatever you want. I had a lot of fun drawing this spaceship. I think I had to leave my comfort zone, drawing machinery and "boy" stuff if you will, but it was a lot more fun than I expected. And now all that mechanical stuff is a lot less scary to approach!

Here are two different versions of Abner's design. The top is the final version, and the bottom one was one I had made at the very beginning stages of development. It is pretty much directly taken from the drawing for the poster that I did, and is very complex. The later one is much more simplified, and more appealing, I hope. I got my song from my very talented and amazing composer, Alex Benson! What a godsend after several failed attempts to get some people to commit to the projects. I am poor, so buying nice cardstock in the overpriced student store is not for me. However, I discovered that the packs and packs of index cards that I had bought for storyboarding purposes actually work kind of nicely with my pen and ink set, if you don't mind that the paper eventually starts getting soggy and degrading.
