Der Kleine Mann by Erich Kästner

The Little Man by Erich Kästner is one of the most enjoyable children's books I have ever read. The story concerns a little orphan boy named Maxie Pichelsteiner, who is about the size of a matchstick. His parents were midget acrobats in Stilke's Circus, and were tragically blown by a gust of wind off of the Eiffel Tower. The circus' resident conjurer, Professor Hokus Von Pokus, adopts Maxie and raises him as his own. I set out to draw Hokus, but I think Hokus is actually much more dapper and sophisticated looking than what came out. This drawing may be closer to my image of the Ring Master of Stilke's Circus, Herr Brausewetter.

Working from home

Working at home is sometimes a very trying experience. One would think that the freedom to not wear pants, play music loud, eat whenever you want, and not have to deal with other people would be the key to productivity. Sometimes, though, things don't work out exactly as planned. Sometimes you get things done...

But sometimes it's not what you set out to do.

Drunk

I was trying out brush pens and drew an inebriated man. Enjoy.

Some sasquatch action...

Here are some Sasquatch drawings that I did awhile ago. I thought it would be fitting to post after coming back from my trip to Oregon. We went hiking in the Ape Caves near Mount St. Helens, which was supposed to be a site in which there were several accounts of Sasquatch sightings.

Big Foot is supposed to be the missing link between ape and mankind, but where is the line actually drawn? Which qualities are ape-like and which are human? Humans can be just as violent and confrontational as the most savage ape, and apes actually have complex social networks, just like human society. I imagined Big Foot as misunderstood, a very civil fellow that just didn't really like wearing pants.

Third Year Film

Here is my third year film. I will try to post more development stuff in the future. It's about an old man, birds, and hijinks.

Really belated 48 hour film

So, at CalArts there is a tradition during first semester to get everybody together and make a film in 48 hours. Random words are submitted, and drawn out of a hat at midnight on friday. The film must fit the theme in some small way, but other than that there is free reign to do whatever you want. The fun of the 48 hour film is seeing how creative people can get with very little time, and also enjoying the spontaneity of the pressure-free opportunity to make a crappy or crude or non-sensical film. This year the theme was "hair", and my classmates Matt Braly, Carrie Hobson, and I decided to share the load and work on one together.

This happened way back in October, but somehow we never got around to posting it or anything, but it's vacation and I figured that I should update the ole' blog. Hey mom and dad, ten points if you can guess which segment I animated! This post is for you guys 'cause everybody else saw this already!

My life has been fulfilled...

Okay, now even if you're not the type to like cute animal videos, and you cringe every time one of your friends extolls the comedic virtues of some random cat video, YOU HAVE NOT LIVED!!! Until you've seen this one. Seriously. Who knew that hedgehogs liked carrots? Or that when they eat them, their faces do amazing contortions? HEDGEHOGS ARE SO COOL! FTW!
